How Help Desks Price Seats and AI Resolutions
The agent seat price is now the smaller half of a help desk bill. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Help Scout and Intercom each meter their AI agent in a different unit, and a session is not a resolution. Read from the four pricing pages on October 13, 2026.
This article is a documentation review: it is based on the vendors' own published pages, checked on the date shown. We may earn a commission from some links; it never affects what we recommend.
A help desk quote has two halves now, and the seat price is the smaller one. Zendesk, Freshdesk, Help Scout and Intercom all sell agent seats per month, and all four meter their AI agent separately. The meters do not measure the same thing.
One charges per verified resolution, one per outcome, one per session that may resolve nothing. This note reads the four pricing pages and a Zendesk policy page on October 13, 2026, then works one month of volume through each.
It is the help desk version of our note on per seat, per contact or per credit billing.
Read the seat price twice, because one page prints it twice
Zendesk lists Support Team at $19 per agent a month paid yearly or $25 monthly, Suite Team at $55 or $69, and Suite Professional at $115 or $149. Suite Enterprise with Copilot is contact sales. Annual billing is stated as 20% below monthly.
Freshdesk lists Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent a month billed annually. The page we read showed three paid tiers and a 14-day trial, and no free plan card.
A trial and a free plan answer different questions, which is the distinction in free trial or free plan.
Help Scout lists Standard at $25, Plus at $45 and Pro at $75 per user a month, with a free plan for 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site. Annual billing is marked 16% lower.
Intercom's page disagrees with itself. With Pay annually on, the three plan cards carry $19, $85 and $132 per seat a month. The machine-readable price inside the same page lists Essential at $39, Advanced at $99 and Expert at $139.
Both were present on October 13, 2026, so keep both until checkout settles it. The page also states a one full seat minimum, free Lite seats for internal collaborators on the top two plans, and a 14-day trial.
The AI line is metered in four different units
Zendesk prices automated resolutions at $1.50 each when committed in advance and $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Included resolutions vary by plan, and the page does not print the per-plan number, so ask for the allowance before modelling anything.
Help Scout sells AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, billed monthly on usage, after a three-month trial the page calls unlimited.
Intercom prices Fin at $0.99 per outcome on every plan, with at most one outcome per conversation however many questions Fin answers. Nothing is charged if Fin cannot answer or the customer asks for a human. Fin Voice is $1.99 per voice outcome through sales.
Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions per plan, then charges $49 per 100 sessions. By our arithmetic that is $0.49 a session: the cheapest unit on the table, and the hardest to compare.

A session is not a resolution, and that gap decides the bill
Freshdesk defines a session as a unique interaction between an end user and an AI agent. For email it is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email, with every AI reply inside it counting once. A session that solves nothing still counts.
Zendesk goes the other way. Its resolution tier policy names three outcomes and states that assisted escalation, where AI contributes before a human finishes, and contained resolution do not count against your allowance.
Only a verified resolution draws from the allowance, after an LLM reads the thread and confirms the request was satisfied. The same page sets when a conversation ends: 72 hours after the first email, a default two hours on messaging, immediately on voice.
- Zendesk: a verified resolution only, $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, with handoffs explicitly free
- Intercom: an outcome only, $0.99, one per conversation, nothing when the customer asks for a human
- Help Scout: $0.75 per AI Answers resolution, with the page silent on how a resolution is verified
- Freshdesk: per session, resolved or not, $49 per 100 after the 500 included
The same traffic therefore produces four different invoices, and the lowest unit price can still produce the highest bill. It is the trap we described in what contact limits mean in email marketing tools: the definition, not the number, sets the price.
Price the copilot apart from the AI agent
The agent that answers customers and the copilot that helps staff are separate line items at three of the four. Zendesk lists Copilot at $50 per agent a month paid yearly, Contact Center at $83, and Action Builder credits at $200 per 100,000 actions.
Freshdesk lists Freddy AI Copilot at $29 per agent a month on Pro and Enterprise, day passes from $2 to $12, and connector tasks at $80 per 5,000.
Intercom lists Copilot at $29 per agent a month billed annually or $35 monthly, with 10 Copilot conversations free per agent each month. Its Pro add-on is $100 a month for 500 conversations and 6,000 credits.
Three of those add-ons are themselves per seat, so they scale with head count rather than with usage. That is a different risk from a meter, and worth separating when you model billing units.

Work one month of volume through all four
Editorial scenario, not a vendor quote: five agents, and 400 conversations a month the AI handles end to end. Seat prices are the annual figures above.
- Freshdesk Pro: 5 seats at $55 = $275, plus $0 because 400 sessions sit inside the 500 included
- Help Scout Standard: 5 users at $25 = $125, plus 400 resolutions at $0.75 = $300, so $425
- Intercom Advanced: 5 seats at $85 or $99 = $425 or $495, plus 400 outcomes at $0.99 = $396
- Zendesk Suite Team: 5 agents at $55 = $275, plus 400 resolutions at $1.50 = $600, or $800 pay-as-you-go
Two caveats keep this honest. The 400 are not the same event at each vendor, because Freshdesk counts sessions. And Zendesk includes some resolutions per plan, by an amount the page does not publish.
The lesson survives the caveats: included volume wins at small scale, a cheap unit wins once volume passes the allowance. Decide which side you are on first, as with record counts in how to compare CRM free plans.
Fill these five rows, then choose
- Seat price on both terms, since three of four pages show a 16% to 20% annual gap
- What the vendor calls its AI unit: resolution, outcome or session, in its own words
- How many units each plan includes, and whether the page prints the number or defers to sales
- Price per extra unit, and whether committing in advance cuts it, as $1.50 against $2.00 does
- Which conversations do not count: handoffs, failed answers, reopened threads, internal copilot use
Fill the rows on one day, from vendor pages, and date the sheet. Every figure here moved within the past year. A trial is the cheapest way to count your own volume, as argued in free trial or free plan.
Bottom line
Entry seat prices sit in a narrow band of $19 to $25. The AI meter is where the money is, quoted in units that do not line up: $0.49 a session, $0.75 a resolution, $0.99 an outcome, $1.50 or $2.00 a verified resolution.
Count your own resolvable conversations, then pick the unit that fits them. Where a page prints two seat prices, as Intercom's did, budget the higher one. The same discipline applies to any usage-based billing unit you are quoted.
Frequently asked questions
What is an automated resolution in Zendesk?
It is the billing unit for AI agents. Zendesk's resolution tier policy states that assisted escalations and contained resolutions do not count against your allowance, and only a verified resolution does, after an LLM confirms the request was satisfied. Committed resolutions cost $1.50, pay-as-you-go $2.00, as of October 2026.
How much does Intercom's Fin cost?
$0.99 per outcome on every plan, per the pricing page checked October 13, 2026, with at most one outcome charged per conversation and nothing charged if Fin cannot answer or the customer asks for a human. Fin Voice is $1.99 per voice outcome through sales.
Does Freshdesk have a free plan?
The pricing page we read on October 13, 2026 showed only Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent a month billed annually, plus a 14-day free trial. We found no free plan card on that page; check the signup flow if you need one.
Which is cheapest for a five-agent team?
On published annual rates, Help Scout Standard at $125 a month for five users is the lowest seat cost. Add 400 AI conversations and Freshdesk Pro at $275 is cheapest, because its first 500 Freddy sessions are included.
Do I pay for AI when the conversation goes to a human?
At Zendesk and Intercom, no. Zendesk's policy says assisted escalations do not draw on the allowance, and Intercom charges nothing if Fin cannot answer or a human is requested. Freshdesk counts a session regardless of outcome, so a handoff can still cost you.
